Tuesdays with Dorie: Baking with Dorie - My Favorite Pumpkin Pie

The 71st recipe I made with the Tuesdays with Dorie: Baking with Dorie group is My Favorite Pumpkin Pie and can be found in the Baking with Dorie cookbook on page 272.
Ingredients: pumpkin puree, heavy cream, sour cream, eggs, brown sugar, honey, ground ginger, star anise powder (I left this out), fine sea salt, dark rum, vanilla, and whipped cream for serving.
While it seemed a bit early to be making pumpkin pie, it also seemed like a good idea to try this recipe with thoughts of taking it for Thanksgiving, perhaps it would even be our favorite pumpkin pie as well as Dorie’s favorite pumpkin pie, and it could be that this new version would supplant the older one that I’ve been making for years and years.
The ingredient list is a bit long, and very rich, which made for a delicious pumpkin pie, perfect for a holiday celebration. I followed the recipe and the baking time specified  with one exception: I left out the anise flavoring as I knew Mark would not be a fan of the flavor. It all came together easily and baked in the time specified. Does this replace my old tried and true pumpkin pie recipe? Maybe, just maybe it might. I will have others weigh in but it might be the new Guest of Honor on the Thanksgiving table moving forward.

Please note that the recipe, as printed in the book, has a couple of errors in measurement and baking times, Dorie kindly provided the corrections and they worked perfectly. Should you wish to make the pie, you can easily find these corrections online by searching for the recipe.
If you would like to join in, just make it, bake it, and leave a link to your post at the Tuesdays with Dorie website: tuesdayswithdorie.wordpress.com. At the website you will find the postings for the current recipe, the list of recipes chosen each month, and some baking chit chat that is definitely helpful as well as fun.  We don’t publish Dorie's recipes here, but you can buy the book and have them ALL at your fingertips.

  1. Smart call on the star anise. I made this pie when the book came out and did not care for the flavor. Everyone else did though. Your pie is absolutely beautiful.

    1. Thank you...yes, definitely a no on the star anise in pumpkin pie, can't even imagine that tasting nicely. Some things one just knows about oneself, right?

    1. Well, I'm asking myself it was a family favorite or if the family liked it because that was what was served, lol. At any rate, there was never any leftovers, but this recipe had Mark saying that it was possibly the best, so I'm thinking good enough reason to make it the new go to.

  4. Looks absolutely great! And glad to see and read your good review, bc I'm making it for Thanksgiving without doing a trial run...dicey move, I know. :)

  5. It's always worth it to try a new version of a recipe. I made it with the star anise, and it was fine. However, I don't think it will replace my longtime favorite, which is very spicy.

    1. Now that sounds interesting, I don't think I've ever had one that was very spicy and now I am intrigued.
